At a glance

A US in-house SDR earns about $50,000 to $70,000 base in 2026. Load in payroll tax, benefits, tooling and ramp and the real cost is roughly $60,000 to $90,000 a year before commission, or $5,000 to $7,500 a month. A US agency or pay-per-meeting shop runs $3,000 to $8,000 a month and keeps the rep, the list and the playbook. A dedicated offshore South African SDR through VirtuHire US runs $1,500 to $2,400 a month, native English, working US hours, in your CRM, with no recruitment fee and a 30-day replacement guarantee. Offshore wins when you want a dedicated rep you direct. US in-house still wins when the seat must be physically present or is a stepping stone to a US closing role.

What a US in-house SDR costs in 2026

Base salary is where most budgets start and where most of them go wrong. A US SDR base runs about $50,000 to $70,000 in 2026, usually with a variable component on top tied to meetings booked or qualified opportunities created.

  • Entry SDR (inbound response, list work, sequence execution): roughly $50,000 to $58,000 base.
  • Full-cycle outbound SDR (dials plus email plus LinkedIn, own territory): roughly $60,000 to $70,000 base.
  • High cost-of-living markets push the same seat to the top of each band. Remote-US hiring softens this but does not erase it.

Then comes the part that is easy to leave out. Employers carry roughly 30% on top of base: employer-side payroll tax, health benefits, paid time off, and the tooling an outbound seat needs. A dialer, a sequencer, a data provider and a CRM seat are not free, and they are per-rep.

SDR levelBase salaryFully loaded (+30%)Per month
Entry$50,000~$65,000~$5,400
Mid$60,000~$78,000~$6,500
Full-cycle outbound$70,000~$91,000~$7,600

So a US in-house SDR realistically costs $60,000 to $90,000 a year before commission. Commission on top typically adds another 20 to 30% of base at target.

The hidden cost nobody budgets: ramp and churn

SDR is one of the highest-turnover seats in software sales, and the cost of that churn rarely appears in a budget line. Two numbers matter more than the salary:

  • Ramp. A new SDR is rarely at full productivity before month three. You pay three months of loaded cost for a fraction of the output.
  • Replacement. When the seat turns over you pay the recruiting cost again, plus the ramp again, plus the pipeline gap while the seat is empty.

This is why a seat that looks like $6,500 a month on the spreadsheet often costs materially more per productive month over a two-year window.

What a US SDR agency or pay-per-meeting shop costs

The second model is outsourcing to a US agency, usually priced $3,000 to $8,000 a month, sometimes per booked meeting instead. It removes the hiring problem, and it introduces a different one.

  • You do not control the rep. They work several accounts, on the agency's playbook, not yours.
  • You often do not keep the data. Lists and sequences frequently stay with the agency when the contract ends.
  • Per-meeting pricing rewards volume, not quality. Booked is not the same as qualified, and show rates vary widely.

Agencies genuinely fit some situations, particularly a short burst into a new segment where you want speed and no headcount. For a durable pipeline motion, the incentives point the wrong way.

What a dedicated offshore SDR costs

The third model is one full-time person, dedicated to you, working in your CRM and your messaging, who happens to be based offshore. Through VirtuHire US a South African SDR runs $1,500 to $2,400 a month, all inclusive.

  • Inbound and CRM-heavy SDR at the lower end of the band.
  • Full-cycle outbound SDR running dials plus email plus LinkedIn at the higher end.
  • No recruitment fee, no placement percentage. One monthly rate covers payroll, tax, HR and compliance, all handled on our side as employer of record.

Commission is optional and common. Where clients run a meetings-booked or qualified-opportunity bonus, it is paid straight through to the rep at no margin to us.

The three models side by side

ModelMonthly costDedicated to youYou keep the dataYou direct the work
US in-house$5,000 to $7,500 before commissionYesYesYes
US agency / per-meeting$3,000 to $8,000NoOften noNo
Offshore dedicated (South Africa)$1,500 to $2,400YesYesYes

The offshore column matches the in-house column on control and ownership, at roughly a third of the cost. That is the whole argument, and it only holds if the rep can actually do the job in your market, which comes down to hours and language.

Hours and language, the two things that decide it

Hours. South Africa is 6 to 7 hours ahead of US Eastern. An SDR working 3pm to 11pm local covers 8am to 4pm US Eastern, which is the prime cold-call and speed-to-lead window. For a Pacific-time team, a later shift covers the same working day. This is the practical reason South Africa beats markets that sit 12 hours offset, where live calling into the US means overnight work indefinitely.

Language. English is South Africa's main business language. For a seat that spends its day on the phone with US buyers, that is not a nice-to-have. Screen it directly: ask for a recorded call sample before you interview, and judge the unedited writing rather than the CV.

When a US in-house SDR is still the right call

Three cases, and they are real:

  1. The seat has to be physically present, sitting with the sales floor, in the room for pipeline reviews and coaching.
  2. Regulatory or contractual requirements mean the person handling prospect data has to be US-resident.
  3. The SDR is a farm team. If the point of the seat is to promote into an AE role on a US comp plan within a year, hire in the US.

If none of those apply, the case for paying three times as much is weaker than it looks.

How we built this guide

US salary bands are drawn from published 2026 compensation data for sales development roles and cross-checked against what our own US clients report paying. The 30% employer load is a standard planning figure covering payroll tax, benefits, paid time off and per-seat tooling. Agency ranges reflect commonly published retainer and per-meeting pricing; agencies rarely publish rate cards, so treat those as reported ranges rather than quotes. VirtuHire US rates are our own current bands, not estimates. Verify any competitor number directly before you budget against it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an SDR cost in 2026?

A US in-house SDR costs about $60,000 to $90,000 a year fully loaded before commission, roughly $5,000 to $7,500 a month. US agencies and pay-per-meeting shops run about $3,000 to $8,000 a month. A dedicated offshore South African SDR runs $1,500 to $2,400 a month all in, with no recruitment fee.

What is the difference between an offshore SDR and an SDR agency?

An offshore SDR is one full-time dedicated person working in your CRM, on your messaging, building your pipeline. An agency runs its own playbook, often on recycled lists, and bills per booked meeting. With offshore you keep the rep, the data and the messaging inside your business, and you direct the work.

Can an offshore SDR cold call US prospects?

Yes. South Africa is 6 to 7 hours ahead of US Eastern, so an SDR working 3pm to 11pm local covers 8am to 4pm US Eastern, the prime cold-call window. English is South Africa's main business language, which keeps connect and conversation rates intact on dial-heavy outbound.

Should I pay an offshore SDR commission?

Most clients do, and it helps retention. Commission or a meetings-booked bonus is paid straight through to the rep at no margin to us. It is optional, and some clients run base only.

When is a US in-house SDR the better choice?

When the seat needs to sit physically with your sales team, when deals require US-resident staff for regulatory reasons, or when the SDR is an early hire you intend to promote into a closing role on a US comp plan.

What happens if the offshore SDR is not a fit?

VirtuHire US includes a 30-day replacement guarantee. If the SDR is not right inside the first 30 days you get a replacement at no extra cost, and there is no recruitment fee either way.
